On a sinking ship? The Rolex Yachtmaster II

CHRONEXT

In a few days, the Watches & Wonders Fair 2023 will start, and there is a lot of discussion about possible new products. But there are also some watch models that are rumoured to be discontinued. The Yachtmaster II from Rolex is mentioned particularly frequently.

A watch made for the regatta sport

The Yachtmaster II is a real eye-catcher, both visually and technically. The special feature of the Yachtmaster II is its rotating bezel. In most watch models, the bezel and the movement are not connected. The Yachtmaster II combines these two components mechanically. The bezel functions as a trigger for a programmable countdown. This complication is especially helpful for the skipper in regatta sports, as he or she can synchronise the watch at the same time as the start of the regatta.

A massive and sporty design

At 44 mm, the Yachtmaster II is currently the largest watch from Rolex. The watch is available in three different versions: Stainless steel, rose gold and in bicolour (stainless steel/yellow gold). The Oyster strap, which is customary for Rolex, stands for pleasant wearing comfort but also for robustness, and the Oyster-Lock clasp ensures that the strap cannot be opened accidentally.

Is the discontinuation definite for 2023?

The regatta function of the Yachtmaster II can be understood as a niche complication, because in everyday life such a timer is not used as often as other complications. The brute design with a case size of 44 mm is also not suitable for everyone's wrist, especially since smaller watches are currently becoming increasingly popular. These factors are often mentioned when debating a possible discontinuation. There is still no official statement from Rolex as to what the future holds for this watch model. In a few days, all fans of the Yachtmaster II will have the final certainty.
